children at risk: war and disaster affected

SPECIFIC PROGRAM 1

Project Summary

Title: Tsunami Relief Project in India

Location: India

Lead organization: International Institute for Child Rights and Development

Partner organization: Save the Children Canada

Description:

As part of a coordinated response to the tsunami in Southern India, Save the Children Canada and the International Institute for Child Rights and Development (IICRD) are coordinating efforts to support the work of ASSEFA. ASSEFA’s extensive experience working with women and children in villages across Tamil Nadu forms the backbone of the project. Through the Coastal Area Development Project (CADP), the partners plan to improve the socio-economic conditions in communities affected by the tsunami, by providing comprehensive and sustainable support to women and children. Communities that have been affected by the tsunami will receive livelihood support, so that they can begin to re-establish their self-sufficiency. Psychosocial services, primary health services, basic education and a village warning system will help to reduce the vulnerability of children and their families.

IICRD's psychosocial model is being integrated into the broader Save the Children Canada/ASSEFA tsunami community reconstruction project. IICRD supports the involvement and participation of ALL children, particularly the most vulnerable, to ensure that they are engaged in creating positive social change in their communities.

Date: Ongoing

Lead organization: International Institute for Child Rights and Development

Partner organization: Medicins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders)

Description:

More than Bandages was a Medicins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) project that built on MSF's mental health interventions through the implementation of community based, culturally grounded programs that support the mental health of war affected children.

It focused on:

  • Improving the psychosocial well-being of children, families and communities affected by armed conflict;
  • Improving resilience and reducing trauma symptoms of war affected children; and
  • Therapeutically reconnecting children with themselves, their communities and nature through the practices of Art, Garden, Play, Story and Presence.
  • IICRD developed and carried out evaluations on the effectiveness of this type of intervention and provided expertise on how best to involve community and culture in this process.

Status...

IICRD has taken over the management of MTB. Funding proposals are currently being considered for a project in Palastine.

IICRD will also be drawing on the art garden team and the MTB experience in support of Indian children affected by the Tsunami.
