Global Security Defined

The concept of security is now understood more broadly than in the recent past, extending beyond ideas of national security to that of global and human security. Under the new concepts of security, threats are generated not just from violence but also from such global issues as environmental change, transnational crime, and challenges to sustainable development, to name a few. The Cold War is over, but many challenges remain in building a stable and secure future. Issues like the proliferation of small arms are not receiving sufficient attention. There is a need to deal more effectively with the root causes of conflict such as religious and ethnic differences and the lack of respect for human rights. The objective of this program area is to promote an array of informed policy responses to the various challenges to global security.
