Adapting to Climate Change
and Variability in Toronto
An invitation to a public forum hosted by the Canadian Global Change Program of the Royal Society of Canada.

When: Wednesday May 14, 1997, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Where: Skydome Hotel, 1 Blue Jays Way, Toronto, Northern Lights Ballroom

Free Admission

As part of a bi-national symposium on the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Basin Project, running from May 13-15, 1997 at the Skydome Hotel in Toronto, the Canadian Global Change Program is hosting a special two hour public forum on the evening of May 14, 1997. The forum will examine how climate change and variability in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Basin could affect human activities in the area, and what we should do to prepare for and/or mitigate those effects.

The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Basin Project is a joint Canada-U.S. initiative of the Environmental Adaptation Research Group of Environment Canada's Atmospheric Environment Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory. The project aims to improve understanding of the interactions between climate and society, so that informed regional adaptation strategies can be developed in response to potential climate change and variability.

  • Chaired by Dr. Jeffrey Watson, Executive Director of the Canadian Global Change Program, the evening will include presentations by:

    • Don Haley, Metropolitan Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, on Climate Variability, Climate Change and Flood Prevention in the Toronto Region
    • Henry Hengeveld, Science Advisor on Climate Change for Environment Canada, on The Climate Change Science — Should We Be Nervous?
    • Jack Layton, Metro Toronto Councillor, on Climate Change, Climate Variability and Toronto — Can We Plan For It?
  • Question and answer sessions
  • Reception following the presentations
