The following activities are presented as ideas for focusing students on the global change issues presented in the chapter. Whether you decide to develop one, or many, of these activities, they should always be introduced by relating them to major themes contained within the chapter.
6.0 RESEARCH PAPER ON CANADIAN RESPONSES TO GLOBAL CHANGE ISSUES
Students will write a research paper discussing one aspect of Canadian involvement in global change issues. The paper could focus on a political viewpoint held by Canadian government, it could describe Canadian involvement in UNCED, it could describe an environmental or political organization concerned with global change issues. The choice of topic for a research paper will depend to some extent on the available resources, but more so on the interests of the students. Topics should be cooperatively planned by the teacher and the teacher-librarian; this strategy not only provides for adequate resources, but also incorporates the techniques of independent study as well as the use of periodic tracking of students to ensure successful research experiences.
6.1 ROUND TABLE SIMULATION
Develop a Round Table simulation in class. Students will choose an important topic to discuss; will brainstorm a list of the various interest groups involved-individuals or groups take on the role of these interest groups; and will use the NRTEE Model Youth Kit to formulate the Round Table process. The NRTEE Model Youth Kit provides a complete section for teachers/facilitators, which will make the process much easier for all involved. Students will research, interview, gather information, prepare briefs and proposals for the round table.
Use the Round Table to develop plans for further activities. Students could involve the community by staging the Round Table simulation in public or by asking community members to participate in the event. Prepare a report of the Round Table process, the decisions reached, and the further action plans created to distribute to local newspapers, interest groups, government officials.
Contact environmental groups and industry cooperatives in your area for other effective methods currently being implemented to advocate change.
