IAI News

The Inter-American Institute (IAI) has made significant progress with the start-up of activities to support scientific research and with the capability building that has taken place through collaborative research efforts. Since 1995, the IAI has funded 37 Start-Up Grant proposals and 23 Initial Science Program proposals (Rounds I and II). In addition, in support of the IAI's training and education goals, the governments of Brazil, Canada, and Mexico have contributed scholarships to the IAI. The IAI is and will continue to be committed to advancing the work of all these initiatives.

The IAI is also completing its work team. Christopher Hill started work as IAI's Financial Officer in July 1996 and as of October 1996, Dr. Bradford Wilcox began his duties as the Chief Scientific Officer for IAI. They will be working with the IAI Director, the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), the Executive Council (EC), and the IAI scientific community to meet the many new challenges in the year ahead: advancing the Science Agenda, and increasing the country membership, financial resources and links with other organizations in the global change research community.

From September 16-20, 1996, the IAI Conference of the Parties (CoP) and the IAI EC met in Havana, Cuba (Third Meeting of the IAI CoP and Fourth Meeting of the IAI EC). During the CoP meeting in Havana, the EC renewed its membership and elected its new board, which is presided over by Dr. Robert Corell from the U.S. (Chair), Lic. Arístides Lorlesse from Panama (Vice-Chair) and Lic. Carlos Ereño from Argentina (Rapporteur). Two vacant positions on the Scientific Advisory Committee were also filled.

Among the main issues addressed and approved at these meetings were:

  • The IAI Directorate Core Budget for Year 2 — 1996/97
  • The IAI Overhead and Salaries Policy Guidelines for Research proposals
  • Round III of the Initial Science Program and the formation of a task force to advance it. This task force has the following priorities:
    • Training and Education Activities (Capacity Building)
    • Research and Applications Projects on ENSO and Interannual Climate Variability
    • Development of an IAI Data and Information System (DIS)

The task force met in Toronto, Canada on November 18-19, 1996 and will release a final report in March 1997. The next meeting of the Scientific Advisory Committee will be held in Ottawa on May 8-9, 1997.

The call for proposals for Round III was issued at the beginning of March, 1997. For details, visit the IAI web site at .
