  • The Earth System: Geology Lessons for Our Future

An International Symposium in Toronto, Ontario — December 5-7, 1996

The Canadian Global Change Program is one of the sponsors of this symposium looking at the impacts of human activity on the planet. The symposium is taking place at the Ontario Science Centre, and is being organized by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIAR), through its Earth System Evolution Program.

During the symposium, representatives from the research, educational, media, public and private sector constituencies, as well as members of the general public, will be immersed with international research experts on the following two questions:

    • What lessons are to be concluded from the 4.5 billion year history of the Earth System?
    • What are the impacts on the Earth System of humans, by 2020 AD twice the current 5+ billion population?

The symposium will be divided into the following seven blocks, each with three speakers and a different chair (listed in parentheses):

    • The Planet: Origin and Nature (D. York — Toronto, Canada)
    • Planet Dynamics: Controls and Responses (P. Hoffman — Cambridge, U.S.A.)
    • Life: Origin, Diversity and Extinction (C. Barnes — Victoria, Canada)
    • Ancient Oceans and Atmospheres: Greenhouses and Icehouses (J. Thiede — Kiel, Germany)
    • Global Change and Natural Variability (M. McElroy — Cambridge, U.S.A.)
    • The Earth System: Our Predictive Capacity (T. Lasaga — New Haven, U.S.A.)
    • Human Impact: Earth's Response to Stress (B. Skinner — New Haven, U.S.A.)
