CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF PHYSICIANS FOR THE ENVIRONMENTThe Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) is an organization of medical doctors, other health professionals and environmental experts who are concerned about ecosystems and human health, and are working to encourage physicans to become informed and to speak out on these issues. Numerous surveys have shown that the opinions of physicians on environmental issues carry disproportionate weight. CAPE seeks to encourage the constructive use of this influence by educating the profession and the public on health issues directly related to the environment and advocating environmentally sustainable development when the health connection is indirect.CAPE was officially founded on April 22, Earth Day, 1995. During its first year the association has attracted about 50 founding members, convened its first annual meeting (November 1995, in Edmonton), co-sponsored a major conference on air quality in Canada (with Pollution Probe , the Lung Association, Health Canada, and others), and produced drafts of eight position papers, most of which relate to the health implications of global change. Its current agenda includes co-sponsoring a 1997 conference on water quality with the U.S. National Association of Physicians for the Environment (NAPE), outreach to family physicians across Canada and useful consideration of the environmental impact of the health sector. CAPE is the Canadian affiliate of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE), a federation of 27 national groups. It has developed close ties to the Swedish Association of Doctors for the Environment as well as the Argentinean affiliate. In August 1996, CAPE will host a meeting of the ISDE’s Directing Committee. The next Annual Meeting of CAPE will be held in Edmonton on August 16, in conjunction with the annual conference of the International Society of Environmental Epidemiology, providing on opportunity to take part in this large and important meeting of environmental health scientists. CAPE has been a conduit for distribution of the report, Implications of Global Change for Human Health, by the Health Issues Panel of the Canadian Global Change Program, and has used its findings in the preparation of several briefing papers. The organization efforts were initiated by three physicians with very different backgrounds: Tee L. Guidotti, Warren Bell (community-based family practice), and Trevor Hancock (health promotion and community medicine). CAPE was assisted in its beginnings by the Tricouncil Eco-Research in Environmental Risk Management at the University of Alberta and by the Chair of CAPE, Steve Arudey.
