START OFFERS FELLOWSHIP AND VISITING LECTURER PROGRAMES

The Global Change System for Analysis, Research and Training (START) is an international system of regional research networks, each of which is coordinated by a Regional Research Centre. These centres are linked together to provide a global system through which scientific information is disseminated and research is organized to implement the core research programs including, but not limited to, the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), the World Climate Resource Programme (WCRP) and the International Human Dimensions of Global Change Programme (IHDP).

The following are brief descriptions of three programs currently offered by START:

  • START Fellowships allow young scientists from developing regions to work under senior members of leading laboratories or institutions in any part of the world, where research is conducted on relevant regional aspects of global change. START Fellowships are offered at the dissertation and post-dissertation levels, for one or two semesters.

  • START Visiting Scientist Awards allow more senior scientists from developing countries the opportunity to undertake short-term visits (one-month minimum) to major international laboratories to become acquainted with recent advances in global change research and possible policy applications.

  • The START Guest Lectureship Program provides scientists and institutions in the START regional networks with the opportunity to establish long-term links with leaders in global change research. During their visit, scientists provide lectures, tutorials and advice, with the goal of strengthening existing global change activities and assisting in establishing new lines of policy-related global change research. Lectureships require a minimum stay of one week.

Awards include economy round-trip airfare and modest subsistence allowance.
