UPDATE REGARDING PROPOSALS SUBMITTED TO THE IAI

As most people probably know, much of the United States Government was shut down intermittently in December and January due to disagreements over the U.S. federal budget and due to winter storms. Because the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Secretariat currently operates from offices in the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the Secretariat was effectively closed for a large portion of this period, and several key decisions could not be made by the IAI. The major consequences for IAI scientific programs are the following:

IAI Start-Up Grants (IAISG) (submitted to NSF with a deadline of August 15, 1995)

  • Panel review of proposals will occur on January 16-17.
  • Decision letters will go out in late January.

Initial Science Program (ISP), Round 1 (submitted to IAI/Colorado with a deadline of September 8, 1995)
  • Final decision by IAI Executive Council postponed to end of February.
  • Decision letters will go out during March.

Initial Science Program (ISP), Round 2:
  • The February 15 deadline has been extended until May 15, 1996
  • Final award decisions will be made at the EC meeting after the due date.
  • Decision letters will go out after that meeting.

Investigators contemplating submitting proposals to ISP Round 2 should be aware of the following:
  • Late proposals will not be accepted (after May 15).
  • The IAI cannot guarantee that supporting material submitted separately will be included in the review.
  • Institutions/Investigators in non-ratified IAI nations (Bolivia, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Paraguay, and also in non-IAI nations) must have their portion funded from other sources. IAI ISP funds are available only to institutions in fully ratified nations (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay, and the U.S.A.), according to the formal IAI Agreement. Please contact the IAI Secretariat for the name of the IAI representative in your country if you wish to express support for ratification and/or signing of the IAI Agreement. Proposals from nations ratifying the agreement before the final decision will be eligible for funding.
