INTERNATIONAL GEOCHEMICAL MAPPING

UNESCO recently published a report summarizing the work of the International Geochemical Mapping Project. Launched in 1988 under the auspices of the International Geological Correlation Program, the project has tried to find ways to obtain comprehensive, reliable data concerning the present geochemical composition of the earth's surface. This information is key in the measurement of global environmental changes.

The report reviews the present status of worldwide geochemical mapping, considers data quality and the problems involved in acquiring reliable data, and makes recommendations regarding necessary actions. The recommendations are addressed to national and international institutions involved in extensive geochemical data collection.

The International Geochemical Mapping Project was initiated in Canada, and Canadian contribution to the report was considerable. Publication of the report was sponsored jointly by UNESCO, the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), the Royal Society of London and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

As a result of the publication, IUGS has established a new Working Group on Continental Geochemical Baselines, to seek ways to implement the recommendations contained in the report.

The report is available from UNESCO offices in Paris or from book stores selling UNESCO publications.
