HUMAN DIMENSIONS OF GLOBAL CHANGE STUDENTSHIP

Two new Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) initiatives signal the Society's increased support for research on the Human Dimensions of Global Change. Starting this year, the Society will be awarding a studentship, worth $10,000, to support doctoral research on a topic related to Canadian human dimensions of global environmental change. The evaluation committee for the award will include RCGS members active in the Canadian Global Change Program (CGCP). The annual award has been committed for an initial five year period. The deadline for receipt of applications is April 1, 1996.

The second commitment, also funded by the Society's Research and Grants Committee, is a one-time $5,000 grant in support of the International Human Dimensions of Global Change (IHDP) workshop planned to be held in winter 1996. The RCGS contribution recognizes the leading role that Canadians will be playing in shaping the research agenda of the Environment, Security and Sustainable Development theme, approved by the IHDP at its September 1995 meeting. With its 240,000 members and through its widely-read magazine, Canadian Geographic, the RCGS intends to play a significant role in increasing public awareness of the issues being addressed by the CGCP.

For more information about the studentship and other RCGS Programs contact Karen Hallquist, Coordinator of Society Programs, The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, 39 McArthur Avenue, Vanier, Ontario K1L 8L7; tel: (613) 745-4629. For more information about the HDP workshop contact Dave Henderson at the CGCP Secretariat (address on page two).
