NEW JAPAN-CANADA PANEL ON GLOBAL CHANGE AND THE NORTH PACIFIC

Philip Enros
Science Policy Branch
Environment Canada

The "Japan-Canada North Pacific Earth Science and Environment Panel" was established by the Canada-Japan Joint Committee on Science and Technology Cooperation when it met in Ottawa earlier this year. The Japanese use the term "Earth Science" for what we would call "Global Environmental Change". They do not mean "earth sciences".

The panel's objective is to further cooperation between the two countries through projects of mutual environmental interest. The panel will review current cooperation in existing programs (especially those related to the North Pacific), exchange information on planning in each country's programs, identify areas of possible cooperation, and promote cooperative projects.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade has a Japan Science and Technology Fund. Projects under the panel would qualify for such funding.

Members of the intergovernmental panel have yet to be named. The first meeting will be held later this year. Geoff Holland (Department of Fisheries and Oceans) and Hidetoshi Nakamura (Director, Office for Earth Science and Technology, Japan Science and Technology Agency) will serve as the panel's moderators.

For more information telephone Geoff Holland, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, at (613) 990-0298.
