A Symposium of Canadian Global Change Researchers
Organized by the Canadian Global Change Program
COMPENDIUM OF PROJECT SUMMARIES
The Canadian Global Change Program (CGCP) of the Royal Society of Canada is committed to increasing the awareness and value of ongoing/planned global change research and to facilitating the exchange of information among key Canadian researchers involved in core and related activities related to the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP), the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) and the International Human Dimensions Program (IHDP).
Background
In the spring of 1990, the CGCP held its first Canadian symposium on global change research. The two-day program brought together Canadian researchers undertaking or planning research under the IGBP, WCRP and the newly emerging International Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change Programme (IHDP). The meeting was successful because it served as a unique interdisciplinary venue in which researchers and a variety of stakeholders exchanged ideas.
In September 1995, the CGCP hosted the second Canadian symposium dedicated to this purpose, the first Core Projects Meeting. Over 40 core project researchers, government decision-makers and research managers, and other interested parties attended the day-long event. A valuable compendium of descriptions of global change research projects was compiled and served as the basis for the CGCP publication Understanding Our Changing Planet: An Overview of Global Change Research in Canada, and the 1995 Canadian National Report for the IGBP.
The CGCP has been invited by the Atmospheric Environment Service to hold its next core projects meeting in conjunction with the Joint Scientific Meetings of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) to be held in Toronto, March 17-21, 1997. It was suggested that in doing so the core projects meeting would serve to "showcase" Canadian science for the delegates attending the WCRP meetings.
Objectives
The CGCP is the Canadian national focal point for global change research. Thus the objectives of this symposium are:
1. to increase the profile and relevance of global change research in Canada;
2. to create a venue for information sharing amongst researchers, selected decision-makers and members of the granting councils; and
3. to fulfill part of the mandate of the CGCP-sponsored Canadian National Committees for the IHDP, SCOPE and the IGBP and the Canadian Climate Program Board- sponsored National Committee on the WCRP.
Participants
The participants in this symposium will include Canadian global change researchers, members of the Canadian National Committees for the IGBP, SCOPE and IHDP, representatives from the granting councils, and selected decision-makers and research managers from government.
