WOCE (Canada)(français)Canada has contributed to the international WOCE program in a number of ways. During the planning and implementation phases of WOCE, DFO seconded a senior scientist for a period of five years, first as the first director of the International Planning Office and then as the WOCE chief scientist. Canada also contributed funds to the operation of the planning and then project office as well as the time of a number of scientists who served on various planning committees. In terms of WOCE infrastructure, Canada provides the WOCE data centre for the TOGA/WOCE surface velocity program. Canada has made contributions to the WOCE field program in both the North Atlantic and the North Pacific since 1989. These contributions include one time and repeated hydrographic/tracer sections, time series stations, XBT sections, current meter arrays, surface drifters and microstructure measurements. Canadian scientists are continuing to make significant contributions in the development and use of ocean models on both the regional and global scale. The Canadian program is conducted by scientists within Canadian universities and DFO. It is coordinated by a Canadian National Committee that was established in 1988 by the Canadian National Committee for SCOR. The community is presently (1995) in the process of submitting its final proposal for funding under the NSERC Collaborative Research Program. This proposal, if successful, will continue WOCE activities within the university community until the spring of 1999.
