WMO was formed in 1951, and later that year, agreement between the UN and WMO formally established it as a specialized agency of the United Nations. The aim of the WMO is: i) to facilitate world wide cooperation in the establishment of networks of stations for making meteorological observations as well as hydrological and other geophysical observations related to meteorology.

The WMO also promotes:

i) the establishment and maintenance of centres charged with the provision of meteorological and related services
ii) the establishment and maintenance of systems for the rapid exchange of meteorological and related information
iii) the standardization of meteorological and related observations and the uniform publication of observations and statistics; and
iv) research and training in meteorology and related fields and assist in coordinating international aspects of research and training.

WMO has 8 technical commissions on aeronautical meteorology; agricultural meteorology; atmospheric sciences; basic systems; climatology; hydrology; instruments and methods of observation; marine meteorology.

OMM - Organisation météorologique mondiale

L'OMM a été créée en 1951 et, plus tard la même année, une entente entre les Nations Unies et l'OMM en faisait un organisme spécialisé des Nations Unies.

L'objectif de l'OMM est a) de faciliter la coopération mondiale en vue de l'établissement de réseaux de stations effectuant des observations météorologiques, ainsi que des observations hydrologiques et d'autres observations géophysiques se rapportant à la météorologie.

L'OMM encourage en outre :
i) l'établissement et le maintien de centres chargés de fournir des services météorologiques et connexes;
ii) l'établissement et le maintien de systèmes pour l'échange rapide de renseignements météorologiques et connexes;
iii) la normalisation des observations météorologiques et connexes et la publication uniforme d'observations et de statistiques;
iv) les recherches et l'enseignement en météorologie et dans des domaines connexes, et la coordination des aspects internationaux de ces activités.

L'OMM comprend 8 commissions techniques : météorologie aéronautique; météorologie agricole; sciences de l'atmosphère; systèmes de base; climatologie; hydrologie; instruments et méthodes d'observation; météorologie maritime.
