PAGES - Past Global Changes(français)The objectives of PAGES are: i) to reconstruct the detailed history of climatic and environmental change for the entire globe for the period since 2000 B.P., with temporal resolution that is at least decadal and, ideally, annual or seasonal (Stream I); and ii) to reconstruct a history of climatic and environmental change through a full glacial cycle, in order to improve our understanding of the natural processes that invoke global climatic changes (Stream II). Specific efforts will address solar and orbital forcing and response; fundamental Earth system processes (trace gas composition and climate, impacts of volcanic activity, biospheric dynamics, and ice sheet mass balance); rapid and abrupt global changes and; multiproxy mapping. In each, Stream I will focus on the last 2000 years, and Stream II will focus on the glacial-interglacial cycles of the late Quaternary. Canada has a unique role to play in the PAGES project since high latitude ecosystems clearly reveal the impacts of past climatic change. Canadian contributions to stream I involve facility development, calibration studies, record comparisons, the collection of data records with at least annual resolution and the development of analytical, statistical and sampling regimes. For stream II, attention has been drawn to the Hypsithermal period (ca. 10000-6000 years ago), the Younger Dryas event and older interglacials, which are being addressed through the ODP and LIGA (including CELIA).

PAGES - Past Global Changes [Changements planétaires du passé]Les objectifs du programme PAGES sont les suivants : i) reconstruire l'histoire détaillée des changements climatiques survenus à l'échelle de la planète depuis 2000 BP, avec une résolution temporelle de l'ordre de la décennie au moins et, de préférence, de l'année ou de la saison (volet I) et ii) reconstruire une histoire du changement climatique et environnemental pendant un cycle glaciaire complet, de manière à améliorer la compréhension des processus naturels qui entraînent des changements climatiques planétaires (volet II). On se penchera particulièrement la réponse et sur le forçage solaires et orbitaux; sur les processus fondamentaux du système terrestre (composition en gaz traces et climat, incidence de l'activité volcanique, dynamique de la biosphère, bilan massique des inlandsis); sur les changements planétaires rapides et abrupts; sur la cartographie par données substitutives. Dans chaque cas, le volet I se concentrera sur les 2000 dernières années, et le volet II sur les cycles de glaciation de la fin du Quaternaire. Le Canada a un rôle unique à jouer dans PAGES, car les écosystèmes des hautes latitudes montrent nettement l'incidence des changements climatiques passés. Ses contributions au volet I incluent la mise au point d'installations, des études d'étalonnage, des comparaisons d'enregistrements, la cueillette d'enregistrements avec une résolution minimale annuelle et l'élaboration de régimes d'analyse, de statistiques et d'échantillonnage. Pour le volet II, on s'attardera à l'Hypsithermal (il y a environ 10 000 à 6000 ans), au Dryas récent et aux interglaciaires plus anciens, qui sont couverts par les programmes PSFM et LIGA (dont CELIA).
