IHDP - International Human Dimensions Programme

The Human Dimensions Programme was set up in 1988 by the ISSC. The objectives are:

i) to improve scientific understanding and increase awareness of the complex dynamics governing human interaction with the total Earth system,
ii) to strengthen efforts to study, explore and anticipate social changes affecting the global environment,
iii) to identify broad social strategies to prevent or mitigate undesirable impacts of global change, or to adapt to changes that are already unavoidable, and
iv) to analyze policy options for dealing with global environmental change and promoting the goal of sustainable development.

A research program was developed to address the interactions of such human factors as population size, growth rate, density and structure, consumption and production patterns, technological developments, needs and desires for increased affluence, social structure (including international organizations, national governments, economic markets and land tenure systems), and perception and values.

Several projects will involve collaboration with natural scientists. These are likely to include Land Use/Land Cover change (a joint IGBP-HDP project), the human implications of changes in coastal zones, socio-economic factors affecting greenhouse gas emissions; and the relationship between past environmental and social changes.

PDH - Programme internationale des dimensions humaines

Le PDH a été créé par l'ISCC en 1988. Ses objectifs sont les suivants :

i) améliorer les connaissances scientifiques et accroître la sensibilisation à la dynamique complexe qui régit les interactions humaines avec l'ensemble du système terrestre,
ii) accroître les efforts pour étudier, explorer et anticiper les changements sociaux influençant l'environnement planétaire,
iii) définir les grandes stratégies sociales permettant de prévenir ou d'atténuer les incidences non souhaitables du changement planétaire, ou de s'adapter aux changements qui sont déjà inévitables, et
iv) analyser les choix politiques en tenant compte des changements planétaires et en favorisant le développement durable.

Il consiste à la mise sur pied d'un programme de recherche qui s'intéressera aux interactions entre différents facteurs humains comme la grosseur de la population, le taux de croissance, la densité et la structure de celle-ci, les modes de consommation et de production, les développements technologiques, les besoins et les souhaits pour une plus grande aisance, la structure sociale (comprenant les organismes internationaux, les gouvernements nationaux, les marchés économiques et les régimes fonciers) ainsi que la perception et les valeurs.

Plusieurs projets impliquent une collaboration avec des spécialistes en sciences naturelles. Parmi ceux-ci, on retrouve possiblement le Land Use/Land Cover Change (projet conjoint PIGB-PDH), l'étude des implications humaines des changements dans les zones côtières, les facteurs socio- économiques influençant les émissions de gaz à effet de serre; et les relations entre les changements sociaux et environnementaux passés.
