ICSU - International Council for Scientific Unions(français)ICSU was created in 1931 to promote international scientific activity in the different branches of science and their applications to the benefit of humanity. There are basically two categories of membership: i) national scientific academies or institutions and ii) international scientific unions. ICSU fulfils its responsibilities in a number of ways including the initiation, design and coordination of major international, interdisciplinary research programs e.g. IGBP, and via the creation of interdisciplinary bodies which undertake activities or programs of interest to several member bodies. ICSU also addresses matters of common concern to all scientists, such as science teaching, often in cooperation with other bodies. The National Research Council has represented the interests of the Canadian scientific community since the creation of ICSU and its affiliated bodies. National Committees have been established for each of the Unions and many of the scientific committees. These are composed of representatives from universities, government and industry.

CIUS - Conseil international des unions scientifiquesLe CIUS a été créé en 1931 afin de promouvoir l'activité scientifique internationale dans les différentes sciences et leurs applications pour le bénéfice de l'humanité. Le CIUS possède fondamentalement deux catégories de membres : i) les académies et institutions scientifiques nationales et ii) les unions scientifiques internationales. Le Conseil cherche à jouer son rôle de plusieurs manières, notamment en concevant, mettant sur pied et coordonnant de grands programmes internationaux et interdisciplinaires de recherche comme le PIGB, et en créant des organismes interdisciplinaires qui entreprennent des activités ou des programmes de recherche d'intérêt pour plusieurs organismes membres. De plus, le CIUS s'intéresse à des sujets d'intérêt commun pour tous les scientifiques, comme l'enseignement des sciences, souvent en collaboration avec d'autres organismes. Le Conseil national de recherches a représenté les intérêts de la communauté scientifique canadienne depuis la création du CIUS et de ses organismes affiliés. Un comité national a été établi pour chacune des unions et plusieurs des comités scientifiques. Ceux-ci sont composés de représentants des universités, du gouvernement et de l'industrie.
