GCOS - Global Climate Observing System

GCOS has been established by WMO, IOC, ICSU, and UNEP. It was created to develop a dedicated observing system designed specifically to meet the observation requirements for monitoring climate, detecting climate change, and for predicting climate variations and change. These observations should contribute towards a reduction in the uncertainties regarding climate change, and contribute to major improvements in models which are being developed for predicting climate variability and climate change.

The first priorities of GCOS are to coordinate and facilitate the critical observation tasks necessary to address the principal science and application issues identified in climate, such as: seasonal and interannual prediction, earliest possible detection of climate trends and climate change due to human activities, and reduction of the major uncertainties in climate prediction.

SMOC - Système mondial d'observation du climat

Le SMOC a été mis sur pied par l'OMM, la CIO, le CIUS et le PNUE dans le but d'élaborer un système d'observation conçu spécifiquement pour répondre aux besoins en matière d'observation afin de permettre la surveillance du climat, la détection du changement climatique et la prévision des variations et des fluctuations climatiques. Les observations permises par le nouveau système devraient réduire les incertitudes quant au changement climatique et contribuer à améliorer grandement les modèles destinés à prévoir la variabilité et le changement climatique.

Les premières priorités du SMOC consistent à coordonner et à faciliter les tâches d'observation essentielles pour étudier les grandes questions touchant la science et ses applications en rapport avec le climat, notamment les prévisions saisonnières et interannuelles, la détection la plus hâtive possible des tendances du climat et du changement climatique attribuables aux activités humaines, et l'atténuation des principales incertitudes en matière de prévision climatique.
