GAW - Global Atmospheric Watch

GAW was established by the WMO in 1989, as a world wide system of atmospheric composition monitoring and research, consisting of over 300 observation stations. The aims of GAW are to improve our understanding and facilitate predictions of the future states of the atmosphere with particular emphasis on ozone, climate change and pollution. It is the main source of scientific assessments on the state of the atmospheric environment for GEMS. It provides evaluations of the present, and assessments of the future states and behaviour of the atmosphere. AES participates in this program through the operation of monitoring sites, provision of advice and assistance, and operation of the global data centre for both stratospheric ozone and ultraviolet radiation.

Canada's contribution to the GAW effort is via the CAPMON project and the baseline station in Alert, NWT, both of which provide data for the international GAW data base.

VAG - Veille de l'atmosphère globale

La VAG a été instaurée en 1989 par l'OMM, en tant que système mondial de surveillance et de recherche sur la composition de l'atmosphère regroupant plus de 300 stations d'observation. Les objectifs de la VAG sont de permettre de mieux comprendre et prévoir les états futurs de l'atmosphère en s'intéressant tout particulièrement à l'ozone, au changement climatique et à la pollution. Elle constitue la principale source d'évaluations scientifiques de l'état de l'atmosphère pour le GEMS. Elle produit des évaluations de la situation présente, des états futurs et du comportement de l'atmosphère. Le SEA participe à ce programme en exploitant des stations de surveillance, en fournissant des services de consultation et d'aide et en exploitant le centre des données mondiales pour l'ozone stratosphérique et le rayonnement ultraviolet.

Le Canada contribue à l'effort du VAG en participant au projet CAPMON et en exploitant la station de base d'Alert (T.N.-O), qui permettent tous les deux d'enrichir la base de données internationale de la VAG.
