ACSyS - Arctic Climate System Study(français)ACSyS is a program of the WCRP, whose main objectives are: i) the study of the structure and circulation of the Arctic Ocean, ii) observation and modelling of sea ice, iii) air-sea interaction. iv) fresh water cycle in the Arctic Ocean. ACSyS is a program of the WCRP whose goal is to determine the role of the Arctic in the global climate system. Its activities are focused on (i) understanding the interactions between Arctic Ocean circulation, ice cover and the hydrological cycle; (ii) initiating long-term climate research and monitoring programs for the Arctic; and (iii) providing a scientific basis for an accurate representation of Arctic processes in global climate models. ACSyS also carries responsibility within the WCRP for sea ice modelling issues in the Southern Ocean. ACSyS is a 10 year program which began in 1994. Canada is active within, and currently supports the efforts of ACSyS. In particular, Canadian activities in support of this WCRP endeavour include the establishment of a Canadian ACSyS Committee in which to coordinate Canada's participation in ACSyS. Additionally, Canada has taken a leadership role in two collaborative data collection and research initiatives with the United States. First, in 1992-93, Canada and the United States established, and are currently maintaining, an Arctic Climate mooring through which to develop a long-term data set of ice and water properties in the high Arctic. Secondly, similar in function to WOCE, in 1993-94, Canada and the United States will carry out their first expedition as part of ACSys Arctic Sections Program in which to collect oceanographic data. E. Carmack, of DFO's Institute for Ocean Sciences currently serves as a member of both the Canadian and International ACSyS Steering Committees. ACSyS est un programme du PMRC, dont les principaux objectifs sont les suivants : Le Canada est actif au sein de l'ACSYS et participe aux efforts déployés par celle-ci. Les activités particulières du Canada à l'appui de cet effort du PMRC comprennent notamment la mise sur pied d'un comité canadien ACSyS dont le but est de coordonner la participation du Canada à cette étude. De plus, le Canada a assumé un rôle de leader dans le cadre de deux initiatives conjointes de recherche et de collecte de données avec les États-Unis. D'abord, en 1992-1993, le Canada et les États-unis ont mis sur pied une base pour l'étude du climat de l'Arctique, base qu'ils continuent à exploiter. Les études qui y sont réalisées permettent de compiler des ensembles de données à long terme sur les propriétés de l'eau et de la glace dans l'Arctique septentrional. Ensuite, en 1993-1994, le Canada et les États-Unis réaliseront, sur le modèle du WOCE, leur première expédition dans le cadre du Programme des transects de l'Arctique de l'ACSyS, dans le but de recueillir des données océanographiques. M. E. Carmack, de l'Institut des sciences de la mer de Pêches et Océans, est actuellement membre des comités directeurs canadien et international de l'ACSyS.
