Canada Country Study

Background information

The Canada Country Study (CCS) was officially launched in the early summer of 1996. In Phase I, the focus was placed on assessing current levels of understanding and identifying major gaps in knowledge via a review of the scientific literature. Intended to be a basis for the Canadian contribution to the North American chapter of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Regional Impacts being prepared for COPIII in Kyoto, the assessment process has resulted in the production of eight volumes. These include:

  • Six regional volumes (British Columbia and Yukon, Arctic, Prairies, Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic)
  • A national volume with twelve sectoral studies (agriculture, built environment, energy, fisheries, forestry, human health, insurance, recreation and tourism, transport, unmanaged ecosystems, water resources, wetlands)
  • A national volume with eight cross-cutting issues papers (changing landscapes, costing, domestic trade and commerce, extra-territorial issues, extreme events, integrated air issues, sustainability, two economies)

From these 26 component reports, a series of bilingual summaries are being produced including a National Summary for Policy Makers, a National Plain Language Summary, and six Regional Plain Language Summaries.

More information regarding the Canada Country Study or the National Symposium is available through its website at http://innova.tor.ec.gc.ca/ccs/
