Understanding Global Change and What it Means for Our Future

People see and hear about climate change, a thinner ozone layer, deforestation, over-fishing and the population explosion. Most of their information comes in disconnected bits and pieces from news stories, pamphlets and word of mouth. It is hard to make sense of this information flood, and see it as part of a bigger picture.

Canada and the State of the Planet will fill that information gap with the nation's first concise, annual report on the global environmental changes that shape our lives and our future.

The report will explain what is happening to our world, why it is happening, what it means for Canadians and how we can reduce the risks. It will provide key facts and figures, expert analysis and details on how to get more information.

The report will explain both the environmental trends, and the social and economic forces that drive environmental change. Text, graphs, charts and maps will help people understand and track these global changes over time. It will show what this means for us in terms of food and water supplies, pollution, our health and security.

Canada and the State of the Planet will be the summit of the global information pyramid in a Canadian context. It will be essential reading for people who want to stay on top of global trends.

The report is being prepared for the Canadian Global Change Program, Canada's window on the global environment, by Michael Keating, author of a number of environmental books and reports.

Canada and the State of the Planet will be available as a 100 page book, published in English by Oxford University Press, and in French by Éditions MultiMondes. It is due for release in June. Jim Bottomley
