Paul Summerville - Senior Fellow

Beginning March 2009 Paul joined the Centre for Global Studies at the University of Victoria as a Senior Fellow. There he will conduct research on the balance between social justice and the market economy with a focus on sustainability.
Prior to this position, Paul was based in Boston from March 2007 to February 2009 with Wellington Management LLP, a leading institutional investment manager. He was a global bond strategist with the global bond business where he focused on medium and long term strategies. He was responsible for meeting clients to discuss the team’s investment process, investment ideas, and portfolio positioning.
In January 2006 Paul ran for the New Democratic Party of Canada in the federal election finishing third in the Toronto riding of St. Paul’s. He was nominated in June 2005.
Paul worked from October 2000 to September 2004 with TD Bank Financial Group as Regional Head Asia-Pacific for TD Securities, and Branch Manager TD Securities Japan.
Paul had previously studied and worked in Japan between 1983 and 1994. He completed his Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of Tokyo in 1988. He was a staff economist for Deutsche Bank (1988-1990), chief economist for Jardine Fleming (1990-1992), and head of Asian equity research for Lehman Brothers (1993-1994). He studied Japanese at the Osaka University of Foreign Languages in 1983-1984.
Beginning in 1995 Paul worked in Toronto, Canada as chief economist and head of equity research for Richardson Greenshields. Following the merger with RBC Dominion Securities in September 1996 he held the position of chief economist until the spring of 2000.
He has had regular columns in the Nikkei Weekly and Financial Post. He has also published in the New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Asian Wall Street Journal, National Post and Globe and Mail. He has appeared numerous times in various media including television networks CNN, BBC, ABC, and CBC.
Paul’s studies also included a BA from York University -- Glendon College (1976-1980) with a third year at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1978-1979), an MA from the University of Alberta (1981), and Ph.D. work at the Graduate Institute for International Studies in Geneva (1982) and the University of Alberta (1983).
Paul was born in December 1957, and is married to Dr. Taeko Summerville (retired-neurosurgery). Taeko and Paul have a 20-year old son at McGill University.
